We acknowledge that we work, gather and dance on the the ancestral, traditional and unceded Aboriginal territories of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh people, and how colonial violence is tied to the work we do.
We acklowledge the strength of survivors of sexual assault and those working in front line feminist anti violence work.
We want to thank the artists, volunteers, VAL, and people who have had a hand in contributing to this party. Good Night Out is a passion project, with zero consistant funding ( as is the case with most feminist orgs). It would not be possible to offer subsized training for venues without our supporters or without our volunteer’s donated skills and emotional labour.
ABOUT GOOD NIGHT OUT:
How do we resist rape culture in some things that we turn to as self-care, like art scenes, festivals, raves, live shows and concerts. So many folks seem to have a story lately of creepy or harassing behavior affecting them on a night out. Everyone’s story is a little bit different, because settler colonialism, patriarchy, and archaic ideas about sexuality and gender all manifest differently depending on our bodies, identities and the scenes we move in – but they all have the same power based oppression at the core. This plays out in messed up ways on our dance floors, creating norms that seem to have become a staple in Vancouver’s nightlife.
Good Night Out is a DIY feminist organization, and work together to resist sexual violence in our scenes, and work to create communities that know how to respond to harassment and sexual violence, and create a nightlife where all genders are not just safe, but celebrated, with no tolerance for harassment or violence inflicted on them.
We operate as a collective, meaning we don’t claim to be able to have all the answers, but we know that we each, as a community members, have something we are capable of contributing right now, be it our lived experience, our art, our schooling, our knowledge of harm reduction, or our passion and that all of these things can be acts of resistance. Collectively we can help be the change we want to see on the dancefloor.
